On November 27, 2024, the European Ramblers Association proudly celebrated the re-certification of Marskstien as one of the Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe.
Located in the heart of Tøndermarsken, Marskstien offers a unique hiking experience, weaving through one of Europe’s most ecologically significant landscapes. This trail not only showcases breathtaking nature and vibrant birdlife but also connects visitors with the rich cultural heritage of nearby villages. Every step on Marskstien tells a story of harmony between nature, history, and the local community.
The ceremony took place at Stakladen in Højer, where Tønder’s Mayor, Jørgen Popp Petersen, expressed pride in Marskstien’s role as a cornerstone of sustainable tourism and a unifying element of Tøndermarsken. The mayor highlighted the collaborative efforts of Realdania, A.P. Møller Fonden, Nordea-fonden, and Tønder Kommune in preserving and enhancing the area’s unique natural and cultural heritage, stating, “Marskstien is a shining example of sustainable tourism, where we use what already exists with minimal intervention.”
ERA Board Member Steen Kobberø-Hansen shared similar sentiments in his speech, emphasizing the harmony Marskstien creates between nature, culture, and local communities. “Marskstien is more than just a trail; it offers visitors an immersive experience through one of Europe’s most stunning and ecologically significant landscapes. Each step tells a story – of nature, history, and the people who care for this unique area,” he said.
After the speeches and the presentation of the certificate, around 50 participants braved the dark, rainy, and windy conditions for a hike to Vidåslusen. Despite the challenging weather, the group was rewarded with a warm and comforting soup served indoors before returning to Højer, completing the loop where the celebration began.
Marskstien continues to stand as a model of excellence, demonstrating how sustainable tourism can harmoniously blend natural preservation with cultural appreciation.
