Transnational journey of Canadian Liberation in WWII
Overview
The European Hiking Federation (ERA) is an associated partner in the Transnational Journey of Canadian Liberation in WWII, a project led by the Juno Beach Centre. This initiative retraces the footsteps of Canadian soldiers who liberated Europe during World War II, connecting significant historical sites through hiking and cycling trails. The journey spans across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, offering an immersive experience that blends history with outdoor exploration.
About the project
This transnational project commemorates the Canadian soldiers’ efforts during WWII by creating a network of walking and cycling routes linked to key historical sites. Over 200 content items, including stories, monuments, museums, and memorials, will bring the history of the Canadian liberation to life for participants as they explore these trails.
Key project milestones:
- Period 1: Drafting the list of 200 sites and stories.
- Period 2: Finalizing the definitive list of sites and plotting the trails (currently ongoing).
- Period 3: Developing historical content, digital maps, and installing trail markers, with completion expected by June 2025.
ERA’s role as an Associated Partner
As an associated partner, ERA contributes to the project by:
- Providing expertise on hiking and cycling trail development.
- Sharing data on existing routes near historical sites to assist with route planning.
- Promoting the trails within ERA’s network to ensure they are widely accessible and known to hikers and cyclists across Europe.
While ERA is not the lead partner, we play an important role in ensuring that these new trails are well-integrated with existing networks and provide a seamless experience for outdoor enthusiasts.
Explore the trails
The final routes, set to be completed in 2025, will be accessible digitally, allowing hikers and cyclists to explore the trails using GPS data. These routes will guide participants through key historical sites, with stories and context provided at each location, enhancing both the educational and outdoor experience.
Key partnerships
The project is led by the Juno Beach Centre, with ERA working alongside the following partners:
- Liberation Route Europe (LRE) Foundation
- For Freedom Museum
- Fédération Française de la Randonnée Pédestre
- Wandelnet
This partnership allows the integration of historical narratives and outdoor recreation, fostering remembrance tourism and historical education.
Vectors of memory
One unique aspect of the project is the installation of Vectors of Memory, designed by the renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. These physical markers will be placed at significant points along the trails, providing a tangible connection to the past and enhancing the historical narrative of the Canadian liberation.
Join the journey
This project offers a rare opportunity to explore the liberation journey through the beauty of Europe’s landscapes. ERA invites all hikers and cycling enthusiasts to join this journey and engage with this important part of European history. More information on the trails and how to participate will be available soon.
