ROUTES Project: Enhancing sustainable and inclusive trail use across Europe
Updated: 5 February 2025
Project overview
The ROUTES project (Responsible Overall Use of Trails through a framework for a European Standard) is an ERASMUS+ initiative coordinated by FFRandonnée. The project focuses on developing a standardized framework for trail grading, sustainable management, and digital tools to support both trail managers and users across Europe. The application for ROUTES will be submitted in 2025, and if approved, the project will commence in 2026 and run until 2028.
Objectives
- Trail grading standards: Develop consistent, inclusive criteria for grading trails, ensuring clarity and accessibility for diverse user groups.
- Sustainable management models: Create comprehensive guidelines for the sustainable maintenance and management of trails, focusing on environmental protection and resource efficiency.
- Innovative digital tools: Design user-friendly digital platforms that provide real-time trail information, enhancing user experience and safety.
Methodology
The project will be implemented through a phased approach:
- Knowledge building (WP2): Conduct extensive research on existing trail grading systems, management practices, and shared trail use across Europe. This will involve literature reviews, surveys, and data analysis.
- Framework development (WP3): Based on the findings from WP2, develop a standardized guidance system for sustainable trail use and management, incorporating specifications for digital tools.
- Pilot testing (WP4): Test and validate the developed standards and specifications for tools in diverse environments, including forests, mountains, coastal areas, and urban settings across several European countries.
- Dissemination (WP5): Share project outcomes through targeted communication strategies, engaging with stakeholders at local, national, and EU levels.
Stakeholder Engagement
ROUTES prioritizes collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders:
- Trail users: Hikers, cyclists, equestrians, and individuals with varying accessibility needs.
- Trail managers: Organizations responsible for the development, maintenance, and promotion of trails.
- Local communities: Residents and businesses near trail networks, fostering local economic and social benefits.
- Policy makers: Authorities involved in outdoor recreation, environmental conservation, and sustainable tourism.
Expected outcomes
- Improved user experience: Provide accurate, accessible information that empowers users to make informed decisions about trail use.
- Sustainable trail management: Promote practices that ensure the long-term preservation of natural environments and trail infrastructure.
- Inclusive access: Ensure trails are accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities and diverse recreational needs.
- Strengthened community collaboration: Foster partnerships between trail managers, local communities, and digital providers to enhance trail information and management.
Project timeline
- 2025: Submission of the ERASMUS+ application.
- 2026: Project initiation upon approval.
- 2026-2028:
