Gendarmstien recertified as a Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe

A celebration of resilience and excellence

On December 6, 2024, Gendarmstien was officially recertified as a Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe during a special ceremony at Gendarmstiens Lejrskole in Broager. The event brought together approximately 50 participants, including trail enthusiasts, local officials, and Steen from the ERA Board of the European Hiking Federation (ERA-Hiking Europe).

Mayor Jan Riber Jakobsen of Aabenraa Kommune thanked all contributors to the trail’s reestablishment, including municipal employees and landowners. He underlined that Gendarmstien is a valuable asset, not only for local residents but also for the many tourists who visit the area.

Mayor Erik Lauritzen of Sønderborg Kommune highlighted the successful collaboration with Aabenraa Kommune and Naturstyrelsen Sønderjylland. He also expressed pride in Gendarmstien being showcased at the 3rd European Trails Conference in Paris, where it was recognized as a model for resilience and trail restoration following the 2023 storm surge.

Representing ERA-Hiking Europe, Steen had the privilege of delivering the official speech and presenting the certificate, where he highlighted Gendarmstien’s resilience and exemplary trail management following the storm surge in the fall of 2023.

Gendarmstien’s success in restoring the trail was also recognized earlier this year at the 3rd European Trails Conference in Paris, where it was showcased as a model of best practices in reestablishing hiking trails after climate challenges.

Following the formal proceedings, participants enjoyed a 2 km hike along the Gendarmstien, guided by the landowner, who shared insights about the 2023 landslides and the history of his property. The event concluded with light refreshments, including warm soup, back at the lejrskole.

This recertification is a well-deserved acknowledgment of Gendarmstien’s unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability, and exceptional visitor experiences. It stands as an inspiration for trails across Europe, proving that with dedication and cooperation, challenges can be transformed into success stories.
