The European Commission has officially launched the 2026 European Capital and Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism competitions, recognizing cities that lead in smart, sustainable tourism practices.
What are the competitions about?
The competitions celebrate excellence in tourism innovation, rewarding destinations that integrate sustainability, digitalization, accessibility, and cultural heritage & creativity into their tourism strategies.
European Capital of Smart Tourism 2026
This title is awarded to a major city (100,000+ residents) that showcases outstanding smart tourism initiatives in all four competition categories.
European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2026
This award recognizes smaller destinations (25,000 – 100,000 residents) that have successfully implemented green transition practices to enhance sustainable tourism.

Winners will receive:
- EU-wide recognition as a leading tourism destination.
- A dedicated PR and branding campaign to boost visibility.
- A tailor-made promotional video and a sculpture to be displayed in the city.
- Opportunities for networking with top tourism destinations across Europe.
Eligibility & application details
- Open to EU Member States and non-EU countries participating in the Single Market Programme (SMP).
- Applications must be submitted by 30 May 2025 at 17:00 CET.
- Finalists will be announced in September 2025, and the winners in November 2025.
