On November 27, 2024, the European Ramblers Association proudly celebrated the re-certification of Marskstien as one of the Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe.
This recognition highlights Marskstien’s exceptional quality, reaffirming its position among the top 25 hiking trails in Europe.Located in the heart of Tøndermarsken, Marskstien offers a unique hiking experience, weaving through one of Europe’s most ecologically significant landscapes.
This trail not only showcases breathtaking nature and vibrant birdlife but also connects visitors with the rich cultural heritage of nearby villages. Every step on Marskstien tells a story of harmony between nature, history, and the local community.
At the ceremony, Steen from the ERA board delivered a speech emphasizing the trail’s integration of high-quality infrastructure, clear signage, and innovative solutions such as the Flextrafik transportation service, which enhances accessibility for all visitors. These features, coupled with the passion and dedication of volunteers and local stakeholders, ensure Marskstien remains a model of excellence in sustainable tourism.
Tønder’s mayor also addressed the audience, reflecting on the trail’s significance for the region and its potential to attract hikers from across Europe.
After the two speeches and the handover of the certificate, approximately 50 participants braved the elements for a hike in the darkness, enduring heavy rain and strong winds to reach Vidåslusen. Their efforts were rewarded with a warm and comforting bowl of soup served inside. The group then returned to Højer, completing the loop where the celebration had begun.
The recertification of Marskstien is a testament to its continued commitment to providing exceptional hiking experiences while preserving the natural and cultural treasures of Tøndermarsken.
