ERA at the 7th Panhellenic Trails Meeting: Strengthening bonds and sharing Insights

The European Hiking Federation (ERA) was proudly represented at the 7th Panhellenic Trails Meeting, held in Chania, Crete, from 15 to 17 November 2024.

This significant event brought together trail experts, enthusiasts, and stakeholders from across Greece and Europe to celebrate and discuss the future of hiking and trail development.

ERA’s Representation: As the representative from ERA, Steen, a member of the ERA Board, presented on behalf of the federation. The presentation underscored ERA’s dedication to promoting hiking, preserving trails, and fostering cross-border cooperation. Key points included:

The development and significance of European long-distance paths (E-paths).

ERA’s role in connecting people, cultures, and nature through quality trails.

The benefits of sustainable hiking practices, cultural heritage preservation, and regional development.

Engaging presentations and discussions: ERA’s presentation was complemented by various sessions and workshops that highlighted trail sustainability, access, and community engagement.

Insights from the World Trails Network: A highlight of the event was Julian Gray’s presentation. As co-chair of the World Trails Network and Director of the South West Coast Path Association, Julian showcased the extensive sustainability efforts behind the 630-mile South West Coast Trail in the UK. His insights touched on the trail’s positive social, economic, and environmental impacts, emphasizing sustainable management practices and community engagement that contribute to resilience and conservation.

Interactive Workshops and Cultural Activities: The meeting also included workshops on sustainable trail development and maintenance, guided visits to archaeological sites in Chania, and a concert celebrating Cretan music and heritage.

Building Networks and Friendships: Representing ERA, Steen forged meaningful connections, including a valuable friendship with Julian Gray. These relationships pave the way for future knowledge exchange and joint efforts to promote and sustain Europe’s trails.
